In preparation for the beginning teacher seminar I spoke at last week, I was talking to a teacher I admire incredibly: my mum. We were discussing what makes an excellent teacher and my mum, who is a wise, experienced and gifted educator, said this phrase which captivated me. She said, “You’ve got to teach from inside yourself.” Wow. Just think about that for a moment: to teach with excellence is to teach from within. Yet so often we make teaching an external thing. We focus on our classroom, our management strategy, our assessment and reporting, our students – all of which are important but all of which are external to who we are. To teach from inside yourself will overflow into all these areas, but it must first come from within.

This week’s assignment:

Today’s assignment is an inside job. Take a moment to look within and remind yourself of why you became a teacher. Reconnect with that passionate teacher inside of you and get to know them again. Allow your teaching today to come from within, from who you really are, from the inside out. Today, follow my mum’s wise advice and “teach from inside yourself.”

Enjoy the journey,

And more importantly,

Enjoy the moments.
