Last week I was in the Qantas Club waiting to board a flight and I saw the latest Qantas advertisement about online check-in. It immediately grabbed my attention:

“Check in before you turn up”

I instantly applied this to myself as a teacher and to my teaching. How often do we ‘turn up’ to our classroom without having really ‘checked in’ with what we’re going to teach or the students we are going to engage with? How often do we arrive at our next lesson, only to then gather our thoughts and quickly try and pull something together for the students to learn?

This statement challenges us to ‘check in’ to our lessons BEFORE we ‘turn up’ at our classrooms.

This week’s assignment:

Simple. In your lessons this week, do the following: check in before you turn up.

Enjoy the journey,

And more importantly,

Enjoy the moments.
