Get The Most OUt Of Term 3

I’m on vacation at the moment and I’ve just spent the morning relaxing by our private pool in beautiful Bali, Indonesia. I always like to take time at the beginning of each quarter to plan ahead and what better way to do that then taking time on holidays to think about my next three months. I want to get the most out of every single day. Here’s 5 ways I plan to get the most out of the next school term. Let me share them with you.

1. Enjoy the moments

I know I always end my posts with this, but I really think this is the most important thing for having a brilliant term at school. Take time to really enjoy the moments. Those fleeting moments with your students, with your colleagues, talking to parents – every day brings many opportunities for you to create positive memories. Enjoy the moments.

2. Be nice to your colleagues.

That’s right, one of the best ways for you to get the most out of this term at school is to be nice. That’s it. Be nice. Be friendly to the people around you. Talk to the people who work at your school (remember the cleaners and the administration staff). Even talk to those negative co-workers. Be an enjoyable person to work with by being genuine, approachable and authentic.

3. See the ‘whole’ person

Remind yourself that students (and your colleagues too) are real people with real lives who have challenges and circumstances and things going on just like you do. When you’re interacting with a student, or dealing with a classroom management situation (here’s a super helpful resource for you) remember to look at that student as an entire person, not just the part they are presenting to you in that particular moment.

4. Proactively build a relationship with your boss.

The relationship you have with your boss or team leader is crucial to the quality of your work environment and significantly influences your attitude toward work. Look for ways to get along with your boss and take the initiative in building a good working relationship with them.

5. Do the things you’re avoiding.

Procrastination takes your mental as well as your emotional energy. So often, we spend weeks or even months avoiding the most important things that we know we really need to do. To have an awesome term, get ‘that thing’ that you’re avoiding over and done with. Write the report, tell the truth, stick to your guns, have that difficult conversation. Whatever it is, do it now. Get it done. And then you can really enjoy the rest of the term.

This week’s assignment:

Which of these 5 things do you need to focus on the most?
Do you need to:

1) take time to really enjoy the moments?
2) make an effort to be more friendly and approachable?
3) remind yourself that your students are real people too?
4) take some time to build a relationship with your boss?
5) stop procrastinating and DO that thing right now?

Enjoy the journey,

And more importantly,

Enjoy the moments.

🙂
